The Railway Conductor (RWCD) training program has been designed and developed in partnership with the Railway Association of Canada.
Conductors work as members of a train crew in either road or yard service. Conductors are involved with switching cars, making or splitting up trains in yards, or moving cars between yards, sidings or tracks according to instructions originating with yard and train planners. The role of the Conductor is an important link between customer satisfaction and maintaining efficient operations.
Ecological Restoration (ER) is a scientific discipline that has recently emerged due to the increasing need to restore damaged ecosystems. Restoration scientists and practitioners are ‘ecosystem physicians’ …. Doctors apply knowledge of physiology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, and parasitology to address human health issues. ER practitioners apply knowledge of: ecology, hydrology, geochemistry, geomorphology, and engineering to address ecological health issues1. A gift from MAN Diesel & Turbo Canada, the MAN 7L48/60 Medium Speed Diesel engine weights 119 tons and is used in the Marine Engineering Trainng Program. The 48/60 series of engine is also a mainstay of power plants and is therefore very relevant and beneficial to the power engineer program as well.
The Marine Engineering diploma program is a four-year cadet Co-operative program. BCIT Marine Engineering students (Cadets) are trained in all mechanical, electrical, and structural aspects of ships; from main engines to auxiliary systems found in all ocean-going vessels ranging from super tankers to cruise ships, cargo ships, and more.
This program is designed to provide hands-on, theoretical, and technical knowledge in the following areas:
Propulsion plant operation and maintenance
Electronics and electrical technology
Ship construction
Fuel systems
Engineering science and knowledge
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning
Naval architecture
Thermodynamics
Seamanship is the art of operating a ship or boat. It involves topics and development of specialised skills including: navigation and international maritime law; weather, meteorology and forecasting; watchkeeping; ship-handling and small boat handling; operation of deck equipment, anchors and cables; ropework and line handling; communications; sailing; engines; execution of evolutions such as towing; cargo handling equipment, dangerous cargoes and cargo storage; dealing with emergencies; survival at sea and search and rescue; and fire fighting. The degree of knowledge needed within these areas is dependent upon the nature of the work and the type of vessel employed by a mariner.
The Enhanced Bridge Watch Rating program offering (BWR-E) is supported by Transport Canada to provide a pathway for specific underrepresented groups (women and indigenous people) to enter into rewarding marine sector careers. Explore a marine career working on tugboats, ferries or deep sea vessels. Career opportunities also include water-based ecotourism, commercial fishing, sport fishing, travel and other recreational marine guiding roles. The Nautical Sciences program is a four-year full-time Co-operative program accredited by Transport Canada Marine Safety and Security (TCMSS). You will gain a thorough background in the principles and operation of modern vessels like super tankers, bulk carriers, cruise ships, tugboats and off shore supply vessels. Students (Cadets) receive instruction and training based on seamanship and traditional maritime skills in areas such as:

• Marine safety, security, and rescue
